The Monkees did sing a lot of songs written by others, many of them huge names in the music industry, but they DID write and record and perform their own songs, as well. Mike Nesmith was the most prolific songwriter of the four of them, but Peter and Mickey wrote and recorded some Monkees songs, t
oo. And they DID play their own instruments. Peter and Mike were accomplished musicians, and Mickey and Davey were seasoned performers who learned to play their instruments well.
