A lot of people have covered Lennon's great song; but this is the best cover AFAIK, and far better than her studio version.
From the sadly-departed NYC soundstage show "Sessions at West 54th", and first aired on late at night on American PBS stations (with naughty word and all) early in 2000. Video found via ed2k and probably off of her DVD "Dreaming my Dreams".

I've said it before and I have to say it again, John Lennon wrote an excellent song in Working Class Hero but Marianne Faithful, along with her musicians have created a far superior version, I feel that John Lennon would agree with me on this one, don't get me wrong, I love the Lennon version, I just happen to like this version a whole lot more.

Guys I just want to say I got Marianne's new album EASY COME, EASY GO...I was blown away its beyond amazing she does a duet with Rufus Wainwright, and the last track is a duet with Keith Richards and he plays guitar. Ahhhh...Its doing well over seas it was just a bit confusing because it says 18 songs for music lovers on the web and even in the liner notes but there's only 10 on it. Anyway her voice is better then ever..great reviews too...God I love this woman. Go BUY IT!

cunn, you should listen a bit more songs by john lennon. then you will see how original is perfectly performed connected to text. there are some songs that can compare or even be better then original. but there is no one, and i repeat, NO ONE who can replace john lennon, or sing better his songs. dont be so foolish. people. listen, educate youself before you say such unrealistic things...

It would appear that my opinion hit a nerve with some people but it is MY opinion after all, the world would be very boring if we all agreed on everything, I happen to love Lennon's music but I still think that Marianne's version of Working Class Hero is superior. Enough said.

I love this band. I am not talking about Maryanne. I mean the band. There is soul in each note. It is harmony. This is RAW meaning that the band did not practice...not ever and yet when they heard the notes that Maryanne sung they just blended and oh how they blended...it is perfection. Thank You.

I agree w/cunn. No disrect to Lennon; in fact,props for writing this perceptive, biting song. But on the Broken English LP, MF
her band take the song to a new level. It's downright ominous. A key partis that simple, underlying, brooding bassline. Once in a blue moon there are songs great enough that both original and cover are brilliant. Bowie and Nirvana's versions of "The Man Who Sold the World" are examples. Lennon fans, don't be jealous; revel in the universality of the song.

band is good. she sings terrible! this version and green day version have something in common - they're performing a song. Lennon was expressing an idea - through music. that is the major difference.
