Not to imply that the Bee Gees are formally trained, but generally in singing, lower pitches = mouth opened wider; higher pitches = mouth tighter closed.

Allow me to fix this for you. lower pitches = mouth opened less; higher pitches = mouth open wider. You = wrong.
Well, generally, ... ( 4 weeks ago by thegoodgeneral)
Well, generally, when singing formally, the inside of the mouth of the singer is rounded (as well as "singing from the gut"), which closes the nasal passages and mutes a little the higher harmonics of the voice. This creates an artistic singing voice; however, bringing into account the acoustics of the space (absorption and reflection), the lower voice needs more higher harmonics (so open mouth) and the higher voice needs less. But again, this is generally, some in some instances I am wrong.

PS: I'd love to know where you learnt this from. As an audio-engineer, I'm always interested in seeing research done on this type of thing. Singing is a very profound art.
Yup! But there are ... ( 4 weeks ago by thegoodgeneral)
Yup! But there are tons of exceptions. It depends on the vowel, depends on the register of the pitches, so on; and then some singers have preferences and distinctive vocal features. In formal voice training, having your mouth wide open is the usual rule; but falsetto and high registers are more advanced and demand precision. The muscles in your mouth can, with practice, be fine-tuned so to as to produce all sorts of sounds!

(But know that it's not just mouth manipulation! ;))
Interesting that ... ( 2 weeks ago by gnarlyarcher)
Interesting that you are an audio engineer, as that is also what I do. But I have classical training in singing and from what I recall the "Singing from the gut" is actually discouraged and it is recommended that the vocalist sings from the chest, as singing from the gut can cause hernia in extreme circumstance. Have you ever played djembe? Insert your hand into the bottom while you play and you can see that a smaller airspace projects bass while a larger airspace projects treble.
