really people. this is a song about AIDS from a gay narrative. this is a song from the early 90's and you have to fully understand the era the context and the words, all three together!! the song has nothing to do with the USA and the USSR. The pets are as english as can be!!! they are true artists and sometimes artists have to be interpretated carefully.

The Orginal version from 1979 by the Village People had nothing to do with AIDS but instead was generally understood as an expression of the 1970s sentiment of San Francisco as a utopia for the Gay Liberation movement. When the Pet Shop Boys did their remake they added a piece about a sadness and a hopeless optimism, inspired by the aftermath of the AIDS pandemic of the 1980s and how it had affected the supposed utopia of the original version.

chuautesuma Neil Tenant has come out as gay, Chris Lowe has made no references to his sexuality. As for the meaning of the song. Go West was first written and performed by The Village People. It can be intrepreted as a rally cry for homosexuals of america to move to the gay friendly San Fransisco.

I interpret the song and video to be a message of not letting differences of mind and opinion divide us humans, but instead focus on the similarities and let those bring us together. And apply that way of thinking to all sorts of conflicts of opinion in the world - not just east/west and gay/straight, but all.
Whatever message any other version of this song might have had, it's safe to say that the Pet Shop Boys had their entirely own message - them being creative geniouses.
