Nobody knows what Macross is in the US, teh anime was heavily edited and released as Robotech, each characters has very different stories.
The japanese publisher thought it's not worth to release an anime adaptation game for a market that does not exsist. Although I don't think Macross VFX-2 is based on any anime, The whole franchise is.
They have a robotech game though for PS2 and it's quite impressive as well. Check out Robotech: Battlecry

This was a crying shame that this game was released only in the U.S. as a demo for the Official Playstation Magazine!!! I just pulled the demo out!!! This game is truly a game to behold!! Bandai has made phenomenal games in the past even this game as a PSX port is astonishingly beautiful!!! Bandai please release some old school Macross games that never made here and put them on the PS3!!! Nice video sir!! This sparked my inner Macross and Robotech love once again!!
