no, iammy, just because a song is more diverse and layered with more songs, does not mean that the melody isn't stolen. Flat out, The Raconteurs stole the melody from this song and played it through a piano. Sad, but true.
Plus, if you want diversity, listen to Dios Malos' self titled album.

So any song that has a melody similar to a song that precedes it is automatically stolen? Fact is, they're two different songs. True, the melody is similar, but imitation doesn't constitute theft.

iammy: You have a soid point, but in song writing, it is a whole different ball game. A melody can be so simple, but to come up with it is extremely difficult. Look at all of Kurt's and P Harvey's songs. It is simple, but as a person thinks about it, it took gifted creativity to come up with it.
That is what I am trying to say. The melody is everything. How you layer arrange all the instruments, layer the sounds, deliver the song, etc. are insignficant in theft :o)
