This is not the fifth best time ever at the ring, this lap was done on a shorther 20.8 km track so if it would be done on the original 22.8 km track it would only be good enough for about 7.15-7.20 lap... just for example, Lauda did 6.58 on the 22.8km in 1975 ferrari F1 car.

One thing I always liked about Derek Bell was he always sounded unassuming and well spoken; which hides the fact he's actually a nutter with large balls - and a extremely high levels of skill.

Didn't the 956 crack 250mph at Le Mans? Also, how much slower was it than an F1 car? It looks like it isn't far off being as quick....

956 only got upto 230mph at Le Mans, the 962 did 240mph. IIRC only one car has topped 250mph at Le Mans, and that was because they sealed the cooling ducts to be more aerodynamic down the straight. The 956 holds the record around the Nurburgring with Stefan Bellof in 6:11 and a modern F1 car could theoretically beat the 6 minute mark as shown by BMW and Nick Heidfeld.

Oh? There's a vid saying 'Porsche 956 does 400km/h at Le Mans' on Youtube somewhere. It certainly looks blindingly, mentally fast! So, in theory, this car isn't THAT much slower than an f1 car? What I don't get is how an F1 car can be so much quicker, when it's not as aerodynamic as a closer wheel car?

And csampan1 Yes Stefan Bellof did do a lap in 6.11 the year before he was killed at Spa over twenty years ago. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Look up Bellof accident at Spa and check it out for yourself.

As the others have pointed out that was Derek Bell, the driver of the car. That lap he did was a 6 min lap for 13 miles. He has no reason to lie, and if you check the Ring site it can confirm the speeds for you.

Belofs lap record for the Nordschleife still stands - I think it was 6:11 if I remember rightly.
It's a shame that a guy of his talent wasn't around long; due to the fatal shunt at Spa in 1985.
